Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: How It Works and Tours from Kigali
By Anna Axelson, Operations Manager, East Africa Safaris · Updated October 2026
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda takes place in Volcanoes National Park, about 2.5 hours by road from Kigali, and the permit costs $1,500 per person for foreign visitors. Because the park is so close to the capital, you can see the gorillas on a day trip from Kigali or spend one or two nights near the park. Our private Rwanda gorilla tours all start in Kigali and include the permit, from $1,692 per person on the 1-day trek for a group of six.
On trek day, you check in at park headquarters in Kinigi, hike from 30 minutes to more than four hours to reach a habituated gorilla family, and spend one hour with them. The minimum age is 15. Rwanda issues only 96 gorilla permits a day, so for July and August we recommend booking 6 months ahead.
Checked: October 2026. Permit prices and rules come from the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) booking portal and Visit Rwanda, RDB's tourism site, and Uganda's from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). We checked them and our own tour prices on October 13, 2026. Our prices are per person and include the gorilla permit.

Check Rwanda gorilla permits for your dates
Tell us your travel month and group size. Our team in Musanze checks permit availability and sends a private quote, with the permit included.
Solo travelers pay more: $1,960 on the 1-day trek and $2,668 on the 2-day trip, for example. International flights, tips, porter fees, visas and travel insurance are not included on any of these tours, and the 1-day trek and the 2-day gorilla and golden monkey safari do not include airport transfers.
How gorilla trekking works in Volcanoes National Park
Every Rwanda gorilla trip follows the same steps, whichever tour you choose.
- Book your dates early. Visit Rwanda says the park has 12 habituated gorilla families open to visitors, and each takes up to eight people a day, so only 96 permits are available daily. RDB sells them first come, first served. For July, August and other peak dates, we recommend booking 6 months ahead.
- We buy your permit. A 50% deposit confirms your booking and lets us buy your permit from RDB. RDB issues each permit with the traveler's name and passport details and checks documents at the park gate, so send us the details of the passport you will travel with. Permits are non-refundable once issued, and if an approved date change requires rebooking, the fee is USD 300 per permit. Our gorilla trekking permit cost guide has the full booking and refund rules.
- Pickup in Kigali. Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel, depending on the tour. On the 1-day trek and the 2-day gorilla and golden monkey safari, pickup is at your Kigali hotel at 4:30 AM.
- Drive north to Musanze. The road to Musanze, the town next to the park where our Rwanda office is, takes about 2.5 hours through terraced hills and farmland. On most multi-day tours you sleep at a lodge near the park before trek day, so trek morning starts with a short drive instead of a pre-dawn one.
- Briefing at Kinigi. Trek day begins with an early-morning briefing at park headquarters in Kinigi. Rangers explain the rules and allocate each group a family according to fitness levels, says Visit Rwanda. You do not choose a family when you book.
- The trek. After a drive to the trailhead, you walk up through farmland and into the forest, at 2,500 to 4,000 m (8,200 to 13,100 ft). RDB says reaching the family takes from 30 minutes to more than four hours, depending on the family, and the walk back can take as long. Porters can be hired to carry your daypack and help you on steep ground; porter fees are not included in our prices.
- One hour with the gorillas. RDB asks you to stay 7 m (about 22 ft) from the gorillas, keep your voice low and take photos without flash. We also ask guests to wear a face mask during the trek, because gorillas can catch coughs and colds from people.
- Back to Kigali or the lodge. On the 1-day trek and the 2-day gorilla trip, you have lunch and drive back to Kigali the same afternoon. If your tour has a night after the trek, the afternoon usually includes the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund or Gorilla Guardians Village, with golden monkeys or a second gorilla trek the next morning.
No specific fitness benchmark is required, but a reasonable level of fitness helps, and rain can make the trails slippery. Our gorilla trekking guide covers the full trek rules, fitness and what to pack, and our Volcanoes National Park guide covers Kinigi, the volcano hikes and the park's other activities.
Rwanda gorilla trekking itinerary: 1, 2 or 3 days from Kigali
Most of our Rwanda gorilla trips follow one of three patterns. These are the actual day-by-day plans of our tours.
1 day: Kigali to the gorillas and back
Our 1-day trek leaves your Kigali hotel at 4:30 AM, reaches park headquarters in time for the briefing, and has you back at your hotel by early evening, after lunch and the presentation of your gorilla trekking certificate. Expect about five hours of driving and a trek of two to six hours in total. Accommodation in Kigali is not included, so book a city hotel for the night before and the night after.
2 days: Kigali first, gorillas on day 2
Our 2-Day Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park runs like this:
- Day 1. After breakfast, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and take a guided tour of the city. After lunch, drive about 2.5 hours north to Musanze and visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Dinner and the night are near the park.
- Day 2. After an early breakfast, it is the briefing at Kinigi and the trek: our itinerary allows two to five hours, depending on where the family is, and you have one hour with the gorillas. Lunch is at the lodge, then you drive back to Kigali, arriving in the late afternoon.
The tour starts after breakfast in Kigali, so plan to arrive the day before; that night is not included. If you would rather see golden monkeys than Kigali, the 2-day gorilla and golden monkey safari picks you up at 4:30 AM, treks gorillas on day 1 and tracks golden monkeys on day 2.
3 days: gorillas and golden monkeys, no pre-dawn start
Our 3-Day Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Tracking Safari runs like this:
- Day 1. Your guide meets you at Kigali's airport or your hotel for the drive north. The afternoon is free at your lodge near the park.
- Day 2. After the briefing at Kinigi, you trek to your gorilla family, then visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus in the afternoon. Second night near the park.
- Day 3. Golden monkeys in the bamboo forest, lunch at the lodge, then the drive back to Kigali, with a stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial before your guide drops you at the airport.
Want two hours with gorillas instead? The 3-day double visits Gorilla Guardians Village on day 1, then treks on two mornings in a row, with a different family each time. With a fourth day, the 4-day safari starts with a night in Kigali when you land and a city tour before the drive north.
Which Rwanda gorilla tour should you choose?
- One free day: the 1-day trek. It is our lowest-priced way to see the gorillas, from $1,692 per person for six or $1,960 solo, but it is a long day with no rest before the trek.
- A first trek, plus Kigali: the 2-day trip. From $2,030 per person for six or $2,280 each for two, with the Genocide Memorial and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus before trek day.
- Both primates, fast: the 2-day gorilla and golden monkey safari. From $2,130 per person for six or $2,380 each for two. Airport transfers can be added at extra cost.
- The easiest pace: the 3-day safari. Two nights near the park mean no pre-dawn drive on trek day, and golden monkeys round off the trip. From $2,428 per person for six or $2,718 each for two.
- Photographers: the 3-day double. A second trek doubles your time with gorillas and shows you a different family. It is priced on request; the two permits alone cost $3,000 per person.
- Arriving on a long flight: the 4-day safari. The first night in Kigali gives you a buffer if your flight runs late. Price on request.
- A full week in Rwanda: the 7-day Wildlife & Primates Safari. Two days of game drives in Akagera, chimpanzees in Nyungwe, Lake Kivu, and the gorillas on the last day, from $4,378 per person for six or $5,306 each for two.
- A smaller permit budget: Uganda. Uganda's gorilla parks can also be reached from Kigali (see below).
If you are unsure, tell us how many days you have and who is traveling, and we will suggest one.
What does a Rwanda gorilla trek cost?
The permit is most of the price. RDB charges foreign visitors $1,500 per gorilla permit, so on our 2-day trip for two travelers, the permit is about two thirds of the $2,280 price. Sharing the vehicle and driver-guide brings the rest down: six travelers on the same trip pay $2,030 each.
Our tour prices include the permit, park fees, your private vehicle and driver-guide, accommodation on multi-day tours and the meals listed. RDB also lists a conditional low-season discount from November to May for travelers who add a stay in Akagera or Nyungwe National Park. It is not guaranteed, so ask us whether it can apply to your dates.
For lodges, visas, tips and how group size changes the price, see our gorilla trekking cost guide.
When to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda
Treks run all year, and so do our tours, 7 days a week. Visit Rwanda gives Rwanda's rainy seasons as mid-February to May and mid-September to mid-December. In the dry season, from June to mid-September, it says roads and paths tend to be easier.
Rain can make trails more slippery, and treks may be longer or shorter depending on conditions and where the gorillas are, but rain does not necessarily mean a longer trek. Pack waterproof gear in any month. For a month-by-month view, see our best time for gorilla trekking guide.
Rwanda or Uganda from Kigali?
Uganda's gorilla permit costs $800, or $600 in April, May and November, according to UWA, which says the low-season permits cannot be rescheduled. Uganda's gorilla parks are farther from Kigali and the trip crosses a border, so allow at least two days. If your time is short, Rwanda is the simpler choice.
Our Uganda gorilla trekking from Kigali guide covers the routes and our Uganda tours, and our Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking guide compares terrain, drive times and trip prices side by side.
Before you travel
- Passport. Bring the passport your permit was booked with. RDB checks documents at the park gate.
- Health. Do not trek with a cold, flu or other contagious illness; RDB may refuse entry. If you wake up unwell on trek day, tell your guide straight away. Our permit cost guide explains what we can do with a Rwanda permit.
- Mobility. Tell us about any mobility or health concerns before you book, and we will talk through the options.
- Insurance. Travel insurance is not required, but we strongly recommend it, including cover for trip cancellation and medical emergencies, because permits are non-refundable once issued.
- Advisories. Check current travel advisories before you book; our FAQ has our latest note.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Rwanda gorilla trekking tour cost?
Our private tours from Kigali include the $1,500 gorilla permit. The 1-day trek costs from $1,692 per person for a group of six or $1,830 each for two, the 2-day trip from $2,030 for six or $2,280 each for two, and the 3-day safari with golden monkeys from $2,428 for six. Flights, visas, tips, porter fees and insurance are extra. Our gorilla trekking cost guide has the full breakdown.
Can you go gorilla trekking in Rwanda from Kigali in one day?
Yes. Volcanoes National Park is about 2.5 hours by road from Kigali, so our 1-day trek picks you up at your Kigali hotel at 4:30 AM and has you back by early evening, from $1,692 per person for six or $1,960 solo. Expect about five hours of driving and a trek of two to six hours. With a night near the park, as on our 2-day trip, you trek rested.
How many days do you need for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
One day is enough for a single trek, but it is a long one. Two days let you trek after a night near the park, and three days add golden monkeys or a second gorilla trek without a pre-dawn start. To add Akagera's big game and Nyungwe's chimpanzees, allow a week, as on our 7-day Rwanda Wildlife & Primates Safari.
Which Rwanda gorilla tour is best for a first trek?
If you have three days, the 3-day Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Tracking Safari gives you two nights near the park, so you start trek day rested, and adds golden monkeys on the last morning. With two days, the 2-day trip includes Kigali and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus before the trek. If you only have one day, the 1-day trek works, but it is a long day.
How far ahead should you book a Rwanda gorilla trek?
Book as soon as your dates are firm. Rwanda issues only 96 gorilla permits a day, and for July, August and other peak dates we recommend booking 6 months ahead. A 50% deposit confirms your booking and lets us buy your permits. Permits are non-refundable once issued, so we strongly recommend travel insurance.
Do you need to buy the gorilla permit yourself?
Not if you book a tour with us. Every gorilla tour we sell includes the permit, and we buy it from RDB in your name once your deposit is paid. Visit Rwanda says you can also book permits directly through the Irembo platform or through licensed operators. We are licensed by the Rwanda Development Board, with our Rwanda office in Musanze.
Can you choose your gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park?
No. Rangers allocate families at the briefing in Kinigi on the morning of your trek, according to fitness levels, as Visit Rwanda describes it. The walk to each family differs, so tell your guide about any health or mobility limits before the allocation. Our 3-day double gives you two treks, each with a different family.
What happens if you don't see the gorillas?
Trackers follow each habituated family every day, but sightings are not guaranteed. Under RDB's rules, if the gorillas' movements stop your group from tracking, you get another chance or a full refund, and if you track all day without reaching them, RDB refunds 75% of the permit fee. There is no refund for late arrival or flight delays, so reach Kigali at least the day before.
