Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and Hikes
By Anna Axelson, Operations Manager, East Africa Safaris · Updated October 2026
Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda's mountain gorilla park: 160 km² (62 sq mi) of forest on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes in the country's far northwest, about 105 km and 2.5 hours by road from Kigali. Twelve habituated gorilla families live here, and a permit to spend an hour with one costs $1,500. The park also offers golden monkey tracking ($100), hikes on five volcanoes from $75, and the trail to Dian Fossey's grave ($75). Every park activity starts at the park headquarters in Kinigi, where you report by 7:00 AM. Our Rwanda office is in Musanze, about 10 km from the park, and our guides are local.
Checked: October 10, 2026. Activity fees and rules come from the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) booking portal, and park facts from Visit Rwanda (RDB's tourism site), RDB and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Figures from other publishers are marked "reported." Our tour prices are per person and include the permits each tour lists.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Visit Rwanda says 12 gorilla families in the park are fully habituated to visitors, with a few more habituated only for research. Each family takes up to eight visitors a day for one hour, so Rwanda sells at most 96 gorilla permits a day. RDB counts more than 1,060 mountain gorillas in the wild across the Virunga Massif and the Bwindi ecosystem, more than 600 of them in the Virungas.
Your trek day runs like this:
- 7:00 AM at Kinigi. You check in, rangers brief your group, and families are allocated according to fitness levels, as Visit Rwanda describes it.
- To the trailhead. Your driver takes you to the start of your family's trail. On our 1-day itinerary, the trek starts at about 8:30 AM.
- The hike. RDB says reaching the family takes 30 minutes to more than four hours, at 2,500 to 4,000 m, and the walk back can take as long. Our itineraries allow two to five hours.
- One hour with the gorillas. No flash photography, and visitors should wear masks to protect the gorillas from coughs and flu.
The minimum age is 15, and no specific fitness benchmark is required, but tell us about any mobility concerns before you book. For July, August and other peak dates, we recommend booking 6 months ahead. RDB also lists a conditional low-season discount from November to May; it is not guaranteed, and our permit cost guide explains the conditions. To compare Rwanda with Uganda, see our gorilla trekking guide and Rwanda vs Uganda for gorilla trekking.
Golden monkey tracking
Golden monkeys live in the bamboo forest on the lower slopes, and RDB says they are found in very few places outside this park, in troops of up to 30. The permit costs $100, with one visit a day, up to 16 people per group and the same 7:00 AM check-in at Kinigi.
On our tours, the walk is usually shorter and gentler than a gorilla trek, with up to an hour with the troop. RDB allows it from age 12; our published tours set 15, so ask us about younger travelers. Our 1-day golden monkey trip runs from Kigali with no gorilla permit, and our 2-day gorilla and golden monkey safari does both treks on back-to-back mornings.
Volcano hikes: Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Karisimbi, Gahinga and Muhabura
The park is named after a chain of dormant volcanoes, and RDB sells a hiking permit for each of the five:
- Bisoke (3,711 m, 12,175 ft). The best-known day hike, to a crater lake on the summit. RDB puts the round trip at six to seven hours for most hikers and under four for experienced ones, with the trailhead about an hour's drive from headquarters. Swimming is not allowed. Our 2-day Bisoke and golden monkey trip has no gorilla trek.
- Sabyinyo (3,669 m, 12,037 ft). Named from the Kinyarwanda word for tooth. Our 1-day Sabyinyo hike is a demanding day for fit walkers.
- Karisimbi (4,507 m, 14,787 ft). The highest and the most expensive permit, at $400. RDB says the name comes from the word for snow, seen most often in June, July and August.
- Muhabura (4,127 m, 13,540 ft). RDB calls it the most difficult: steep, and the round trip must be done in one day.
- Gahinga (3,474 m, 11,398 ft). The smallest, with a swampy crater about 180 m wide on top.
Trails are steep, muddy and lined with stinging nettles lower down, so wear long trousers and boots. RDB says you can hire gumboots, raincoats and gloves at park headquarters.
Dian Fossey's grave and Karisoke
Dian Fossey, the American primatologist, set up the Karisoke Research Center on September 24, 1967, in the saddle between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke (also spelled Visoke), naming it after both. She studied the gorillas there for 18 years until she was killed in 1985, and she is buried in the gorilla graveyard at the old camp, beside her favorite gorilla, Digit.
The hike starts at Kinigi at 7:00 AM. RDB describes a 30-minute drive, a 10-minute walk to the park boundary, then 1 to 1.5 hours through hagenia and hypericum forest to the grave, at about 3,000 m. Allow three to four hours in all.
The Ellen DeGeneres Campus in Kinigi
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's research and education center opened next to the park in 2022 and now houses the Fund's research programs. It is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry 4:00 PM), no booking is needed, and the Fund suggests a $25 donation per adult. Exhibits include a replica of Fossey's forest cabin, a 360-degree theater and a virtual reality experience, alongside a café, a gift shop and nature trails. A two-hour behind-the-scenes tour with a senior staff member costs $800 for up to five people and must be booked ahead.
It fits easily into the afternoon after a trek. Our 2-day gorilla trek, 3-day and 4-day gorilla and golden monkey safaris, 2-day Bisoke trip and 1-day golden monkey trip all include a visit.
Kwita Izina, the gorilla naming ceremony
Kwita Izina is Rwanda's annual ceremony for naming baby gorillas, an official event since 2005. The 21st was held in Kinigi on September 4, 2026, when 22 babies were named, bringing the total since 2005 to 460. RDB sets the date each year and has not announced the 2027 date yet.
Musanze, Kinigi and the area around the park
Kinigi is the village at the park's edge, where the headquarters is. Musanze, the nearest town, sits about 10 km away at 1,700 m, and RDB advises warm clothing for its cold evenings. Around the park, you can add:
- Gorilla Guardians Village (formerly Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village). A community village near the park, where VOA has reported on former poachers now working for conservation. Our 2-day gorilla and golden monkey safari visits it.
- Musanze Caves. A guided RDB tour of about 2.5 hours just outside town. RDB says the caves sheltered local people in wartime for centuries.
- Buhanga Eco-Park. A small forest on a site once used for royal coronation rituals.
- Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. RDB lists them within easy day-trip distance of Musanze.
- Art and village life. Our Musanze partners, Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development and Volcano Art Center, run workshops, village visits and cultural performances. See our community and cultural experiences, and our Rwanda page for the rest of the country.
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park: distance and drive time
The park is about 105 km north of Kigali International Airport, and SafariBookings puts the drive at about 2.5 hours, which matches our own timing. Because RDB wants you at Kinigi by 7:00 AM, a same-day trek means an early start: our day trips pick you up at your Kigali hotel at 4:30 AM. With a night near the park, you start the trek rested and can add a second activity. All our Volcanoes tours start in Kigali, and most use 4×4 safari vehicles, including Land Cruisers, Toyota Prados and safari vans.
Check current travel advisories before you book; our FAQ has our latest note.
Kinigi park headquarters: what to bring and expect
- The right ID. RDB books permits with each traveler's passport details and checks documents at the gate. Wrong or expired ID means no entry, even with a paid permit.
- Clothes. Visit Rwanda recommends walking shoes with gaiters, gardening or leather gloves against nettles, and a light waterproof jacket. Add a warm layer: RDB calls the weather changeable, with sun and rain in the same day.
- A porter. Porters can carry your bag and camera and help on steep ground. Porter fees are not included in our published prices.
- A mask, to protect the gorillas.
- The season. Visit Rwanda gives the rains as mid-February to May and mid-September to mid-December, and the main dry season as June to mid-September. Treks run all year, and rain does not necessarily mean a longer trek. See our best time for gorilla trekking guide.
Where to stay near Volcanoes National Park
Lodges around Kinigi, on the park's edge, put you closest to the 7:00 AM check-in. Musanze has a wider choice, which RDB describes as upper-range and mid-range hotels plus smaller hotels and guesthouses. After the permit, your lodge moves the trip price most; our gorilla trekking cost guide gives reported rates by tier. Our multi-day tours include lodge nights, so tell us your preferred level when you ask for a quote.
How many days do you need? Tours from Kigali
One day is enough for a gorilla trek, two lets you add golden monkeys, and three or four give you both primates without a pre-dawn start. All these tours start in Kigali, and prices are per person, permits included.
| Tour | Days | In and around the park | Solo | 2 sharing | 6 sharing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Adventure | 1 | Gorilla trek | $1,960 | $1,830 | $1,692 |

| 1-Day Golden Monkey Encounter | 1 | Golden monkeys, campus | On request | ||
| 1-Day Mount Sabyinyo Summit Hike | 1 | Sabyinyo summit | On request |
- One day only: the 1-day trek is our lowest-priced way to see the gorillas, but expect about five hours of driving and a trek of two to six hours.
- Both primates: the 2-day gorilla and golden monkey safari is the fastest, the 3-day adds a rest night, and the 4-day adds a night in Kigali after your flight.
- A week in Rwanda: our 7-day Rwanda Wildlife and Primates Safari adds Akagera and Nyungwe and ends with a gorilla trek here, from $4,378 per person for six.
To compare every Rwanda gorilla tour side by side, see Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: How It Works and Tours from Kigali.
What is changing at the park in 2026
None of this changes how you book today:
- A new park manager. In July 2026, Rwanda's Cabinet approved the Rwanda Nature Foundation, which is taking over direct management of Volcanoes and Gishwati-Mukura national parks, with RDB keeping strategic oversight. On October 10, 2026, permits were still sold through RDB's portal.
- A bigger park. Rwanda plans to add 37.4 km² (3,740 hectares), about 23% more gorilla habitat, plus about 6,620 hectares of buffer zones, at a cost RDB puts at about $300 million over 10 years. On August 27, 2026, building began on a village in Kinigi Sector for the 547 households in the first expansion area; compensation there is still being paid, and no completion date has been published.
- Where permit money goes. Volcanoes earned $35.8 million of the $40.8 million that Rwanda's national parks took in 2025, according to RDB, and 10% of park tourism revenue funds community projects around the parks.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Volcanoes National Park, and how far is it from Kigali?
It is in Musanze District, in Rwanda's far northwest, on the Rwandan side of the Virunga volcanoes. The park headquarters is in Kinigi, and the nearest town, Musanze, is about 10 km away. The park is about 105 km from Kigali, a drive of about 2.5 hours. All our Volcanoes tours start in Kigali, and our day trips pick you up at 4:30 AM to reach Kinigi by 7:00 AM.
What is there to do in Volcanoes National Park besides gorilla trekking?
Golden monkey tracking ($100, from age 12), hikes on Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Muhabura and Karisimbi ($75 to $400), the hike to Dian Fossey's grave ($75) and guided nature walks ($55). Near the park, you can visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Ellen DeGeneres Campus, the Musanze Caves, Buhanga Eco-Park, Gorilla Guardians Village and Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. RDB's minimum ages are listed in the fee table above.
How much does it cost to visit Volcanoes National Park?
You pay per activity. RDB charges foreign non-residents $1,500 for gorilla tracking, $100 for golden monkeys, $75 each for Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Dian Fossey's tomb, $100 for Muhabura and $400 for Karisimbi. Our tours include the permits they list: the 1-day gorilla trek from Kigali costs $1,830 each for two or $1,692 each for six. For the whole trip budget, see our gorilla trekking cost guide.
What time do you need to be at Kinigi park headquarters?
7:00 AM. RDB sets that reporting time for gorilla tracking, golden monkeys, the volcano hikes and the Dian Fossey hike. You check in, rangers brief your group, and gorilla families are allocated according to fitness. From a lodge near the park, it is a short drive. From Kigali, it means a 4:30 AM pickup. Bring the passport you booked your permit with.
Can you visit Volcanoes National Park on a day trip from Kigali?
Yes. Our 1-day Rwanda gorilla trek picks you up at your Kigali hotel at 4:30 AM, reaches Kinigi by 7:00 AM and has you back by early evening, from $1,692 per person for six or $1,960 for a solo traveler, permit included. Expect about five hours of driving and a trek of two to six hours. Our 1-day golden monkey trip and 1-day Sabyinyo hike also run from Kigali. A night near the park makes for an easier day.
How many gorilla families are in Volcanoes National Park?
Visit Rwanda says 12 families are habituated for visitors, with a few more habituated only for research. Each takes up to eight visitors a day, which gives 96 permits a day. Families change as gorillas are born or move between groups: at Kwita Izina in 2026, babies from families including Susa, Kwitonda, Umubano and Muhoza were named. Families are allocated on the morning of your trek, so you do not choose one when you book.
Should you stay in Kinigi or Musanze?
Either works for the 7:00 AM check-in. Lodges around Kinigi are closest to park headquarters, while Musanze, about 10 km away, has a wider range of hotels and guesthouses. Our 3-day and 4-day tours stay near the park, and our 2-day Bisoke trip stays in Musanze. Our Rwanda office is in Musanze, so ask us which suits your trip.
Is Volcanoes National Park getting bigger?
Yes, in stages. Rwanda plans to add 37.4 km², about 23% more gorilla habitat, to today's 160 km², plus buffer zones. Construction of a new village for the 547 households in the first expansion area began in Kinigi Sector on August 27, 2026, and no completion date has been published. The Rwanda Nature Foundation, approved in 2026, is taking over day-to-day management of the park.
