Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda: 2027 Price, Rules and Is It Worth It
By Anna Axelson, Operations Manager, East Africa Safaris · Updated October 2026
The gorilla habituation experience is Uganda's longer gorilla visit. Instead of one hour with a family that is used to people, you join rangers and researchers with a family that is still being habituated, in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) charges foreign non-residents $1,500 per person, and its notice of February 26, 2026 raises the price to $1,800 on January 1, 2027. Operators report up to four hours with the gorillas, in a group of four, in Bwindi's Rushaga sector. A standard trek costs $800, or $600 in April, May and November, for one hour in a group of up to eight. We add habituation to our Uganda trips from Kigali on request, and we book your permit through our Ugandan partner.
Checked: October 2026. Permit prices, rules and booking terms come from UWA's conservation tariff and its February 26, 2026 notice, both still listed on UWA's rates page on October 14, 2026. UWA does not publish the sector, group size or time for gorilla habituation, so those figures come from other publishers and are marked "reported." Our tour prices were checked on our tour pages on October 14, 2026; they are per person and include standard gorilla permits.

Sources for every figure are listed at the end of this page.
A habituated family has spent so long around people that it carries on feeding and resting while you watch. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance puts the process at 2 to 5 years and says groups in habituation spend no more than four hours a day with people, against one hour for fully habituated groups. On the habituation experience, you visit a family part of the way through, so you see the work as well as the gorillas. Our complete guide to gorilla trekking covers the standard trek step by step.
The 2027 price rise: what changes on January 1, 2027
UWA's notice of February 26, 2026, signed by Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi, sets a revised tariff from January 1, 2027. For gorilla habituation, it looks like this:
| Visitor category | Now | From January 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign non-resident, including visitors from the US | $1,500 | $1,800 |
| Foreign resident | $1,000 | $1,600 |
| Rest of Africa | $1,000 | $1,000 |
| For comparison: standard gorilla trekking, foreign non-resident | $800 | $800 |
- A 20% rise. Foreign non-residents pay $300 more, and the gap over a standard permit grows from $700 to $1,000.
- No low-season rate. UWA's $600 rate for April, May and November covers gorilla trekking, and its $200 rate covers chimpanzee trekking. Habituation costs the same in every month.
- Which price you pay. The notice dates the new rates from January 1, 2027, but it does not say how UWA treats a permit paid for in 2026 for a trek in 2027. We confirm the rate through our Ugandan partner when we book, and our terms allow us to pass on fee increases made after booking. For a 2027 trek, budget $1,800.
Our gorilla trekking permit cost guide has every Rwanda and Uganda permit price side by side.
What UWA confirms, and what is only reported
The pages that rank for this topic disagree with each other, and few cite UWA. Here is where each fact on this page comes from:
- Confirmed by UWA: the price ($1,500 now, $1,800 from January 1, 2027), that it runs in Bwindi, what the permit includes, the minimum age of 15 for gorillas, the booking rules and the fines.
- Not published by UWA: the sector, the group size, the time with the gorillas and the number of permits a day. UWA's website has a gorilla trekking page and a chimpanzee habituation page but no gorilla habituation page, and its Bwindi park page does not mention the experience.
- Reported, and consistent: the Rushaga sector, groups of four and a minimum age of 15 (Follow Alice and Yellow Zebra Safaris).
- Reported, and contradictory: Follow Alice and Yellow Zebra Safaris report four habituation permits a day, while Uganda Safari Tours reports two families in habituation, each taking four visitors. On time, Follow Alice says the tracking from the family's night nests counts toward the four hours, so you may get less time with the gorillas; Uganda Safari Tours calls four hours a minimum.
Where reports conflict, this page uses the more cautious figure: four visitors, and up to four hours that may include tracking time.
Where the habituation experience runs: Rushaga, Bwindi
UWA's tariff lists gorilla habituation under Bwindi Impenetrable National Park only; Mgahinga's list has gorilla trekking but no gorilla habituation. Operators report that it runs in the Rushaga sector, one of Bwindi's two southern sectors, on the side closest to Rwanda. From Kigali, you reach Rushaga through Kisoro, and UWA says the winding 35 km (22 miles) from Kisoro takes at least an hour, or up to an hour and a half. Rwanda's booking portal lists no gorilla habituation option, so this is a Uganda experience.
- Plan your nights around Rushaga. UWA fines 50% of the permit fee for tracking in a different location, so your lodge should suit the sector on your permit. Our Bwindi Impenetrable National Park guide covers all four sectors and where to stay.
- Do not confuse it with golden monkeys. Mgahinga sells a golden monkey habituation experience, $100 plus the $40 park entry, not a gorilla one. Our Mgahinga Gorilla National Park guide explains it.
What a habituation day is like
UWA does not describe the day, so these details are reported by operators, except where UWA is named.
- Your team. You set out with rangers, trackers and researchers, starting from where the family nested the night before, and watch how the team reads the trail.
- The gorillas. A family early in habituation can be shy. Follow Alice reports that some gorillas may stay hidden, and that a silverback may beat his chest to show he is unhappy.
- The terrain. Bwindi is steep, dense and often muddy. UWA says standard treks take 2 to 7 hours and need moderate fitness, and a habituation day runs longer, because you stay with the family longer. No specific fitness benchmark is required, but you need to be sure-footed.
- Porters. You can hire a porter at the trailhead to carry your bag. Porters cost from $15 and are paid locally; porter fees are not included in our prices.
- What to pack. Rain gear, a warm layer, long sleeves and pants in neutral colors, broken-in hiking shoes, gaiters, gloves, water and your passport.
Gorilla habituation rules
UWA publishes one set of gorilla rules in its tariff, with no separate rules for habituation, so expect these:
- You must be at least 15.
- Do not go if you have a cold or other infectious illness, because gorillas can catch coughs and colds from people. If you must cough or sneeze, cover your face and turn away.
- Keep 10 m (32.8 ft) from the gorillas.
- Do not use flash photography.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke during the tracking.
- Carry your permit and payment receipt.
UWA's published rules do not mention masks; we ask every guest to wear a light face mask near the gorillas. UWA's limits of one hour per gorilla group per day and eight visitors per group are written for standard tracking. Its tariff gives four hours for chimpanzee habituation in Kibale, but no time or group size for gorilla habituation.
Booking, payment and date changes
- We book your permit through our Ugandan partner. UWA sells gorilla permits to foreign non-residents only through tour operators licensed by the Uganda Tourism Board, so you cannot buy one at the park.
- Full payment. Since March 1, 2026, UWA secures a permit only on full payment at booking, and its old seven-day unpaid hold is gone. With us, a 50% deposit confirms your trip, we then secure your permits, and the balance is due 30 days before you travel.
- Date changes. Permits are non-refundable once issued. Where UWA allows a change, it fines 25% of the permit fee for a late reschedule, which is $450 on an $1,800 permit, and 50% for tracking in a different location. If an approved change requires rebooking, our fee is USD 300 per permit. UWA's no-reschedule rule covers its $600 low-season permits; habituation has no low-season rate.
Our Uganda trips you can add habituation to
Every trip below is private, starts and ends in Kigali, and includes standard gorilla permits. Habituation is not a separate tour on our site. On request, it can replace a standard Bwindi trek or be added as an extra day, and we quote the trip with it.
| Tour | Days | Gorilla treks now | From, per person, standard permits included | Adding habituation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Adventure from Rwanda | 2 | 1, in Bwindi, after a night in Kisoro | Price on request | Replace the trek, or add a day |
| 3-Day Uganda Double Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali | 3 | 2, in Bwindi's Rushaga or Nkuringo sector | Price on request | Replace one of the two treks, or add a day |
| 4-Day Uganda Double Gorilla Trekking and Golden Monkey Safari | 4 | 2, in Bwindi and then Mgahinga, plus golden monkeys in Rwanda | $2,996 for six; $3,633 each for two; $4,350 solo | Replace the Bwindi trek and keep Mgahinga, or add a day |
| 5-Day Rwanda & Uganda Double Gorilla Trekking Safari | 5 | 2, in Volcanoes and then Bwindi's Rushaga area, plus golden monkeys and Akagera | Price on request | Replace the Rushaga trek, or add a day |
What it adds to the price. Swapping a standard trek for habituation adds the permit difference: $700 per person in 2026 and $1,000 from January 1, 2027, or more in April, May and November, when the standard permit is $600. Adding habituation as an extra day adds the full habituation permit plus the cost of that day. Your quote shows the exact total, and our gorilla trekking cost guide covers flights, visas, tips and the rest of the budget.
How to add habituation to your trip
- Choose a trip and dates. Pick one from the table, or tell us how many days you have. Our guide to how many days you need for gorilla trekking helps you decide.
- Tell us you want habituation, and whether it should replace a standard trek or come on top of one. If you are still choosing a country, our Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking guide sets the two side by side.
- Book early. Operators report as few as four habituation permits a day, against eight for each standard family. Book as soon as your dates are firm, and at least 6 months ahead for July, August and other peak dates.
- We check and quote. We check permit availability through our Ugandan partner and send a private quote for your group.
- Confirm with your deposit. A 50% deposit confirms the trip, and we then secure your permit, which UWA releases only on full payment.
- Plan the border. You cross into Uganda and back, so a single-entry Rwanda visa is not enough. Our guide to Uganda gorilla trekking from Kigali covers visas, yellow fever and the border posts. Check current travel advisories before you book; our FAQ has our latest note.
Is the gorilla habituation experience worth it?
At 2027 prices, $1,800 buys up to four hours with one family (reported), which works out at $450 an hour if you get all four. A standard permit costs $800 for one hour. Two standard treks cost $1,600 and give you two hours with two different, fully habituated families.
It suits you if:
- More time with one family matters more to you than seeing two.
- You have done a standard trek and want to go further.
- You want to see how rangers and researchers work with wild gorillas.
- You are fit and sure-footed, and happy with a long day in steep, muddy forest.
- You photograph wildlife and want time to wait for behavior. Flash is banned on both visits.
Skip it if:
- You want close, relaxed views. A family early in habituation can be shy, and some gorillas may stay out of sight (reported).
- Your budget is tight. A standard trek gives you the gorillas for $800, or $600 in April, May and November.
- You would rather compare two families. Our 4-day Uganda double treks two, from $2,996 per person for six.
- Your dates are fixed and close, because permits are few.
- Anyone in your group is under 15, or has limited fitness or mobility.
Our view. On a first gorilla trip, two standard treks give most travelers more variety for less money. Habituation is worth the extra if you love gorillas, have trekked before, or want one long, slow encounter instead of two short ones. If you can trek before January 1, 2027, the permit costs $300 less than it will next year.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the gorilla habituation experience cost in 2027?
$1,800 per person for foreign non-residents from January 1, 2027, up from $1,500, under UWA's notice of February 26, 2026. Foreign residents pay $1,600 from 2027, up from $1,000. The permit includes your guide, that day's park entry and a community contribution. UWA's $600 low-season rate does not apply to habituation, so the price is the same in every month. A standard gorilla permit stays at $800.
What is the difference between gorilla habituation and gorilla trekking?
On a standard trek, you spend one hour with a fully habituated family, in a group of up to eight, for $800. On the habituation experience, you join rangers and researchers with a family that is still getting used to people, reported at up to four hours in a group of four, for $1,500, or $1,800 from January 1, 2027. Habituation runs only in Bwindi, in the Rushaga sector (reported); standard treks run in all four Bwindi sectors and in Mgahinga.
How long do you spend with the gorillas on the habituation experience?
Operators report up to four hours, against one hour on a standard trek, and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance says groups in habituation spend no more than four hours a day with people. UWA's tariff states no time for gorilla habituation. Reports differ on whether tracking time counts toward the four hours, so you may spend less time in the gorillas' presence. Plan for a long day.
Where is the gorilla habituation experience in Uganda?
In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the only park where UWA's tariff lists it. Operators report that it runs in the Rushaga sector, on the southern side of the park, closest to Rwanda. From Kigali, you reach Rushaga through Kisoro, and UWA says the 35 km from Kisoro takes one to one and a half hours. Mgahinga sells a golden monkey habituation experience, not a gorilla one.
What is the minimum age for gorilla habituation?
- UWA sets 15 as the minimum age for gorilla trekking, and operators report the same limit for habituation. All of our gorilla trips use 15 as well. Younger travelers still have options nearby: UWA allows chimpanzee trekking from age 12.
Can you do the gorilla habituation experience from Kigali?
Yes. Rushaga is on Bwindi's southern side, reached by road through Kisoro, and our itineraries allow about four to five hours from Kigali to a lodge on Bwindi's southern edge, including the border. We add habituation to our Uganda trips from Kigali on request, in place of a standard Bwindi trek or as an extra day, and quote it for your dates. You need a visa that lets you re-enter Rwanda.
How do I book a gorilla habituation permit?
Through a licensed tour operator. UWA does not sell gorilla permits to foreign non-residents directly, and since March 1, 2026 it secures them only on full payment. Book your trip with us, and we book the permit through our Ugandan partner. A 50% deposit confirms your trip, and we then secure your permit. Permits are few, so book as soon as your dates are firm, and at least 6 months ahead for July and August.
